The largest analytical agencies summarize the results of 2024 for the global venture capital market

CB Insights and Crunchbase have published research on the results of 2024 for the global venture capital industry. Although the data on the figures vary slightly from analysts, in general, the trends are very similar.:

1. The venture capital market is recovering, but it is still far from reaching the figures of previous years. According to CB Insights, the total volume of global VC investments in 2024 amounted to $274.6 billion. This is better than the results of 2023 ($262.8 billion), but significantly worse than 2022 ($436 billion), as well as 2021 ($662.5 billion). According to Crunchbase, the total amount of funding reached $314 billion, which is also higher than in 2023 ($304 billion), but significantly lags behind the results of previous years.

2. The number of transactions has reached an 8-year low. According to CB Insights, there were 26,961 of them in 2024, which is 19% less than in 2023 (33,100), and almost equal to 2017 (27,815).

3. AI is the most attractive segment for investors. According to CB Insights, AI companies accounted for 37% of the total financing and 17% of the total number of transactions last year. For comparison, in 2023 the same figures were 21% and 13%, and in 2022 – 14% and 10%, respectively. In addition, the 5 largest deals of the year were concluded with AI companies. Crunchbase analysts also confirm that a third of all global investments have been in AI companies - the total volume has exceeded $100 billion. This is 80% more than in 2023 ($55.6 billion).

4. Fewer and fewer M&A and IPOs. According to CB Insights, the number of mergers and acquisitions is insignificant, but has fallen — 8,397 transactions against 8,529 in 2023. 355 companies went public against 444 in 2023. In addition, it now takes about 7.5 years on average for a company to go public (2 years more than in 2022).

5. There are 11 more unicorns in the world. In total, according to CB Insights, there were 1,250 unicorn companies in the world in 2024.
